Laucke launch single origin Kangaroo Flour.

Laucke puts grains on the map, and debuts flour of provenance.

Provenance and origin has long been heralded as a unique determinant of taste and quality by wine, cheese and coffee makers, but now Australia’s oldest family-owned flour miller is applying this same principle to its flour products.

For many years, Laucke Flour Mills Managing Director Mark Laucke has been crafting products derived from grains of known and traceable sources in the same way the wine industry produces wine from selected varieties and regions.

“Unique food and wine is pivotal to Australia’s prosperity and central to its identity,” Mr Laucke said.

“Just like their wine industry counterparts — the best grain growers take pride in their high quality produce derived from clean air, water, soils and pristine seed stocks,” he said.

“Grains taste and perform differently, as do grapes, according to the variety, origin, soil and even the weather in which they were grown.”

Laucke believes it is now time to spread the word about the heritage and potential of Australia’s clean grains and their promise and performance across the country’s unique regions.

“In a world where food safety concerns are growing, South Australia is pioneering ‘paddock to plate’ traceability and leading food safety certification, ensuring absolute confidence and peace of mind for domestic and international consumers,” Mr Laucke said.

“The iconic, pristine, and natural environment of Kangaroo Island is separated from the Australian mainland by 22 km and therefore offers a provenance unique to the world,” Mr Laucke said.

“The region’s soil and natural environment produces a range of unique flavoured local foods and beverages —such as wines, cheese, olives, and honey —and grains are no exception.”

“Nowhere else in the world replicates the grains as grown from the purity of the water, air and soil of Kangaroo Island.”

“The soil is balanced, carbon-rich and wonderfully friable, which helps the plant root structures develop quickly and extend deeply, enabling the wheat plant to thrive whilst gathering rich nutrients from the soil.”

“The result is a region with ideal terroir, where high quality grain and grapes grow side-by-side, with selected wheat varieties producing grain of superior quality and flavour.”

“Kangaroo Island farmers have evolved their practices over many years to suit this uniquely protected environment. The island’s ocean boundary keeps the harvest safe from frosts, pests and disease, and the maritime climate and unpolluted soils nurture the growing grain as nature intended.”

“We are enormously proud to be partnering with the farmers of Kangaroo Island, who have grasped the opportunity and developed the sophistication to produce and supply us with grain that is identifiable, certified, tracked and documented, to the extent that Kangaroo Island farmers can represent the provenance of the grain all the way back to the actual paddock—where that vintage of their grain was grown,” he says.

“The integrity of this unique grain is maintained from each paddock all the way through to careful segregation and milling. The unique characteristics of the wheat are retained within the flour, and this provenance can then be tracked right through to the individual loaf of bread you share and the pastry you enjoy.”

The opportunity has been realised this month with the launch of Laucke Flour Mills’ Single Origin Kangaroo Flours - ‘Classic’ and ‘Rising’— both milled from grain traceable to its Kangaroo Island origins.

Mark is a recognised leader and contributor to the local food industry, last year becoming the fifth industry icon to win the Bickford’s Australia Leader Award at the South Australian Food Industry Awards.

His passion for improving awareness of South Australia’s produce and unique environment has also resulted in his appointment as an Ambassador for Premium Food and Wine from our Clean

Environment. This government-appointed role sees him volunteer his time and energy to championing the State, its premium produce and its clean environment.

Laucke Flour Mills Single Origin Kangaroo Flour - ‘Classic’ and ‘Rising’ - are now available in Woolworths, and selected independent grocery stores in the coming weeks.
